Abdiqasim Salad Hassan is a Somali politician and former President of Somalia who served from 2000 to 2004.
He became politically active while studying in the Soviet Union in the 1960s, where he was involved with the Somali Students Association. He returned to Somalia in 1965 and began working with the Ministry of Agriculture.
He subsequently held a number of senior government positions during the government of Mohamed Siad Barre, including ministerial positions and, later, the position of Minister of Interior.
After the collapse of the central government in 1991, Abdiqasim left Somalia and spent part of the following period in Cairo. He later returned to Mogadishu and became involved in political reconciliation efforts.
In 2000, he became a central figure in the Somali National Peace Conference in Arta, Djibouti. The Transitional National Assembly elected him President, and he became head of the Transitional National Government.
